Astra: 150 Schoenberg + Ives
Alex features in the next concert presented by Astra Chamber Music Society, directed by John McCaughey and Andrew Byrne.
Friday the Thirteenth of September is the 150th birthday of Arnold Schoenberg. A few weeks later follows the 150th of Charles Ives. This extra concert in Astra's 2024 season brings together a brief hour of musical parrying between two giants of the last century, whose mutual respect was deep. Choruses and song, piano and organ celebrate in small dimensions the large contrasting instincts of a remarkable pair of figures who changed the sound of a century.

Alex Owens and Lily Begg: A Poet’s Love
What love is stronger than that of a poet? In his landmark song cycle, Robert Schumann captures the pain of poet Heinrich Heine from blossoming love in spring to desperation and death. Robert’s own great love, Clara, was as much a muse to him as every other composer in Europe at the time. Clara influenced a generation of performers and composers with both her virtuosity at the keyboard and works among the greatest of the German Romantic tradition.
Program:
Robert Schumann: Dichterliebe, op. 48
Clara Schumann: Six Songs, op. 13
Johannes Brahms: Von ewiger Liebe, op. 43 no. 1
Featuring as part of the Austral Salon member’s series, 2024.
The Main Hall, St Peter’s Church
15 Gisborne St , East Melbourne Vic 3002
Bookings essential.
